This session will explore the challenges faced by the Hispanic community in receiving comprehensive relationship and sexual health education, focusing on the heavy influence of the Catholic religion and cultural taboos. We will discuss how these factors can contribute to misinformation and make it difficult for Hispanic individuals to access healthcare. Additionally, we’ll examine how certain cultural norms may support harmful practices, such as justifying grooming behaviors and large age-gap relationships. Through these conversations, our intention is to raise awareness and promote healthier discussions about sex and relationships within Hispanic families.
Objectives:
-Explore the lack of comprehensive sex education in the Hispanic community
-Explain how cultural and religious factors limit access to accurate sexual health information.
- Empower parents who have strict beliefs and values around sex to have open conversations about relationship/sex education with their children to help them recognize and report signs of sexual abuse and grooming.
-Address stigma surrounding abortion and birth control and how cultural views contribute to shaming and limiting reproductive choices.
- Discuss the normalization of harmful relationships, such as grooming and domestic violence, and how these are often excused
