Description

Join us for DML's flagship 2025 Pride event!

This special screening of the documentary The Right Girls (2020) takes place after hours and will include pizza provided by our friends at PFLAG Dayton. Director Timothy Wolfer and writer Jonny Orlansky will join us digitally to introduce the documentary, and will also answer questions afterwards.

The Film:

Three young, transgender women from El Salvador and Honduras - Valentyna, Joanne, and Chantal - travel through Southern Mexico within the high-profile 2018 “Migrant Caravan.” They develop a deep friendship as they walk and hitch rides northwards, coping with long journeys, limited funds, and regular harassment. They team up with other trans women – including Sinay – along the route and integrate within the caravan’s LGBTQ community.

The Reviews:

“Watch this, a film with such power and punch…and delicacy.

 – CGiii

"An urgent, cogent documentary that makes visible the experiences of migrant trans women seeking refuge in America."

--Philadelphia Gay News

“The Right Girls is an important step towards giving these women the dignity they deserve, because as the film shows, good, bad, or in between, they are undeniably human, and that’s why it deserves our attention."

– No Rest for the Weekend

The People Behind the Film:

Timothy Wolfer, Director/Cinematographer/Producer
For the last twelve years, Timothy Wolfer has been creating documentaries about humanitarian aid, international development and migration. His work has taken him to 40+ countries, including South Sudan to tell stories of the conflict, Bangladesh to cover stories of the Rohingya fleeing Myanmar, and Cuba as the country opened up to the first U.S. humanitarian assistance. Wolfer filmed and produced the feature film Adopting Haiti (2011), shot days after the 2010 earthquake. He has also produced numerous short docs for PBS stations, winning him a regional Emmy.

Jonny Orlansky, Writer
Jonny Orlansky studied film, journalism and literature at the University of Kansas, where he also learned Spanish while spending a semester in Andalucia. After college he moved to New Orleans where he worked doing post-Katrina relief with people with disabilities and working on death penalty appeals. After four years there, he got his Masters of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle in 2014 in Applied Behavior Analysis and has worked full time as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst for children with autism since. This is his first feature film project, which happens to be an ideal alchemy of all his life experience and interests.

The film is Not Rated but contains topics some viewers may find disturbing, including discussions of abuse and violence. Runtime is 83 minutes. Film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
