Dream a World Anew is an illustrated companion volume to the opening of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Combining essays by scholars and curators with artifacts from the museum's collection, the book surveys the historical and cultural experiences of African Americans. The first section traces major historical periods--from slavery and Reconstruction through the Harlem Renaissance, the Great Migration, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement. The second section highlights African American cultural achievements in art, music, dance, theater, and literature. Profiles of influential figures and contextual sidebars further illustrate the central role of African American history in the broader American narrative.
